What Is a Cochlear Implant?
Cochlear implants are surgically implanted medical devices that treat hearing loss by replacing the function of damaged sensory hair cells inside the inner ear (cochlea) and are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Cochlear implants can help those with moderate to profound hearing loss in both ears who are not receiving enough benefit when using hearing aids.
Cochlear Implant Candidacy Evaluation
Best Life Hearing Center can perform a series of tests to determine whether a cochlear implant may be right for you. This will include:
- Comprehensive hearing testing
- Speech understanding tests with your current hearing aids
- Trial of appropriately programmed hearing aids when needed
- Counseling realistic expectations and outcomes
If results suggest a cochlear implant may help, we will coordinate your referral to a trusted cochlear implant surgeon who will review the results of your hearing evaluation, perform a medical evaluation, and determine the likelihood of success using a cochlear implant.
Cochlear Implant Mapping
After surgery and healing, you’ll return to our practice to activate the device. We will turn on the sound processor and connect it to your implant. We’ll gradually adjust loudness and settings; this is referred to as “mapping.” Then your cochlear implant will be fine-tuned to your program overall several visits as your brain adapts to new sound.
Follow-Up Appointments
We’ll continue to see you for follow-up appointments to ensure your cochlear implant is providing a comfortable level of amplification and you are adjusting well. We’ll optimize your cochlear implant programming, check your device function, provide troubleshooting and support, and coordinate any additional support you may need.
